Jon Bernthal is making his return as Frank Castle in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. Better yet is that this will be just the start of what's to come from The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After making his debut in the original Daredevil series, Bernthal's Frank would feature in two seasons of his own spinoff, The Punisher. Ahead of Daredevil: Born Again hitting Disney+ next year, it was confirmed that the events of Daredevil and The Punisher are MCU canon. In a new interview for the Phase Hero: A Film & TV Podcast, Marvel Studios' Head of Streaming, TV, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, shared more exciting news about the character. He confirmed that Bernthal's Punisher will be a part of the MCU beyond Daredevil: Born Again, despite how the trigger-happy vigilante is much more violent than your average Marvel hero.
When asked if there was a future for Bernthal's Punisher in the MCU, Winderbaum said, "100 percent. Yeah, we feel the same way. He is, he's so great in that role. I can't wait for you to see him on-screen in this series, and there's absolutely a future for him in the MCU afterwards."
I can't wait for you to see him on-screen in this series, and there's absolutely a future for him in the MCU afterwards.
For now, fans can anticipate seeing Bernthal returning as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again. He is one of several familiar faces from the original Daredevil show coming back for the new series, with others including Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson. Of course, Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio are also back to reprise their respective roles as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk.
"Genuine, genuine excitement," Bernthal said about how it felt to be revisiting that role at Disney's D23 Expo. "I think if you're a fan of the show that you saw before, you're going to be a fan of this. I think we're just taking it a step further. We're all here, we're all enormously happy to be with each other. We're proud of what we did, and I think if you're a fan of the show, you're going to be enormously happy."
Jon Bernthal Is the MCU's Version of The Punisher
Bernthal is one of a handful of actors to have played a live-action incarnation of The Punisher. For his return to the role, he has even trained with Thomas Jane, who played the Marvel character in the 2004 film The Punisher. Dolph Lundgren and Ray Stevenson have also played different versions of Frank Castle in feature films.
