If you are like most Americans, you might find yourself plonking a bit of virtual cash this weekend on the two championship games taking place on Sunday, with the Chiefs and Bills facing off for the AFC title and Eagles-Commanders in the NFC.
It’s a pretty sure thing, though, that you don’t have quite as much riding on it as Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
A win for Allen over the Chiefs could very well mean an extra $4 million in his back account. That’s because of the structure of Allen’s contract, which has several well-paying incentives. Allen can bring in an extra $1.5 million this year for winning the AFC and taking Buffalo to the Super Bowl.
A Super Bowl trip also triggers a 2025 contract escalator, which is another $2.5 million in his favor. There is a chance, though, that his contract could be renegotiated before then.
Either way, beating Kansas City won’t be easy, of course. Allen has never beaten Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs, going 0-3 heading into this weekend.
Allen has tried to keep the focus on treating this week as normally as possible, preventing the outside noise about Mahomes from interfering with the team's prep.
“I think have a good week of practice making sure that what we're putting into the game plan guys are understanding it and going out there and practicing hard,” Allen said. “Then when we get on the field on Sunday just trusting in the game plan trusting in each other and have fun playing the game.”
Have fun, too, knowing that a win means a seven-figure payday.
The Bills and Chiefs will kick off at Arrowhead Stadium at 6:30 p.m. EST on Sunday evening.
