Justin Fields was once the shiny new rookie, but the former Bears and Steelers quarterback could be the mentor on the team at the drop of a hat.

Heading into 2024, Justin Fields was looking for any way to keep his career as a starting quarterback in the NFL going. After things went south with the Chicago Bears, Fields was looking for any port in the storm.

The Chicago Bears found one for him via trade with Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Russell Wilson was waiting there. It was clear that there would be some sort of competition. Justin Fields, due to an injury to Wilson, found himself on the field in Week 1. However, Fields was eventually benched.

Not many believed in Fields, and fewer believed he had done enough to be a bona fide starter in 2025, having only played six games. The New York Jets, however, appeared to believe so, giving him a two-year contract worth up to $40 million.

That said, Julian Edelman was at least one name who appears to have bought in on Fields in 2025. Still, with the 2025 NFL Draft coming up, there’s always the possibility of the Jets adding to the quarterback room.

Justin Fields addresses potential to be repurposed into mentor role

Speaking in a clip provided by Pro Football Talk, Fields recently told the media whether he was willing to be a mentor if asked to.

“I don’t really like to answer rhetorical questions, but, like I said, I’m willing to teach, but yeah, I’m not really interested in rhetorical questions,” he said.

It was somewhat of a non-answer, but he did admit that he would be willing to give some pointers if needed. That said, he said more than just “pointers.” He said “teach,” which is a bigger commitment.

Of course, either way, he’s under contract and in shape to have the most lucrative year of his career. He also has no say in whether the Jets add to the room or not.

But which quarterback could end up under his wing?

NFL expert gives two potential options

Speaking on an April 10 edition of “Pro Football Talk,” NFL expert Chris Simms named Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough as two potential options. He also dove into where the Jets might look at quarterback.

“I would not expect quarterback at pick number eight there in the NFL Draft. I think they want to ride with Justin Fields now, where he’s got to worry about is maybe in the second round, maybe at the top of the second is there a guy like Jaxson Dart [or] Tyler Shough from Louisville, who’s very popular in NFL circles right now,” he said.

The later in the draft the Jets select a quarterback, the better news for Justin Fields. With more draft capital spent, the more pressure to see him in action. Jaxson Dart would be a worst-case scenario for Fields, as many agree he is the third-best quarterback in the NFL Draft.

If the Jets select a quarterback in the third or later rounds, Fields likely will be relatively safe. However, if they draft a quarterback in the second round, Fields will instantly become a lame duck quarterback.
