The New Orleans Saints are engrained into training camp at this point. Practices are revving up, and positional battles are getting going. With that, new head coach Kellen Moore is throwing curveballs to his players as they get ready for true game action.
The Saints head coach has added "TV timeouts" during practice. That helps the coaches and players simulate live game scenarios. Players get a bit of a breather, but they are also looking to prepare for what's next in terms of play-call, adjustments, and more. It seems like Moore considers these timeouts an important - but overlooked - aspect.
"There are TV timeouts in games ... You have to train your body to sit there for two or three, four minutes, kind of bring it back down and you got to bring yourself back up for the next period. So it's creating a game-like environment as well." -- Kellen Moore via ESPN
As for when the games matter, this could come in handy. Situational football and knowing what's going on coming out of timeouts has been a struggle for the Saints at times in recent seasons. Delay of game penalties after an offensive time, blown coverages coming out of a commercial break, or even a miscommunication on a play call have all plagued the team on both sides of the ball.
That was Dennis Allen's team, though. Moore is trying to rid nearly any chance of those blunders occurring for the Saints going forward, and fans would probably appreciate if that's the case.
As July winds down, the stakes only grow surrounding the roster in New Orleans. The quarterback competition remains cloudy, with both Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough showing some bright moments so far in camp. Neither has been named the starter, and it is unknown when that will occur.
Demario Davis returned to practice early in the week after a day off on Sunday. Rookie linebacker Danny Stutsman impressed in his place with the starting unit.
Julian Blackmon, a recent free agent signing at safety, has joined practice and looks to be in line for starting reps entering the preseason. Both TE Foster Moreau and TE Taysom Hill have returned to working off to the side during practices as well. Their timetables for a return to practice remain unknown.
