This week, Kevin took to Instagram to share about a recent family scare and detailed how he had to unexpectedly perform CPR on their youngest son Nash.

In a new video, he said, “A public service announcement to all parents of young children: Learn first aid and CPR on young children. Last night, our youngest Nash stopped breathing in the bathtub. Astrid screamed my name from upstairs; she had both boys in the bath. Nash was completely purple from the nipples up. I pulled him, he was really wet, I pulled him and I put him over my knee. Looked like he was choking and we found out he was choking on his saliva, so he couldn’t clear his saliva.”
Kevin went on, detailing what happened next and how this experience affected him.
He shared, “I actually gave him about 10 hard back blows, really hard, and then I had to give him chest compressions before I could get any breath into him. And when I say it was the scariest minute of my whole life, I’m not exaggerating. I’ve done CPR on children before; it’s always been people I don’t know. It’s always hard, but when it’s your own kid, it’s something I’d never thought I’d have to experience.”
Kevin has been working as a firefighter for 14 years and finished his video expressing the importance of learning CPR, sharing how he knows firsthand that it can save a life.
“This is just a PSA. Forward this to another parent who may just need a gentle reminder,” he stated. “Everybody should be confident with CPR and first aid, especially if you have young children. So get it done. And if you can’t get the courses done or you just don’t have the time or whatever your excuses, I’m telling you, there’s some YouTube videos if you just YouTube. Look at the highest viewed ones. There’s some detail on how to do it. You can grab a doll or a stuffed animal and just practice. Because you don’t want to be thinking, ‘Damn, I wish I would have done that’ when it’s too late. So there’s my advice for the day.”
Astrid also commented on the video, giving an update on their son by saying, “Nash is a little warrior.”
We’re so glad that Nash is okay and can’t imagine how scary that situation must’ve been.
We are sending our love to the Wendt family, and we’re so thankful for Kevin’s important reminder. We encourage everyone to learn CPR and first aid.
