The Tampa Bay Lightning have a big offseason ahead of them. Their biggest objective is to free up cap space so they can re-sign superstar forward Steven Stamkos. However, they should also be open to making some depth moves this summer.
When looking at the Lightning's roster, it is clear that they could use another goalie. Jonas Johansson had his struggles as the club's backup in 2023-24, so they should not be against the prospect of adding another cheap goalie. Enter Toronto Maple Leafs netminder Martin Jones.
Jones, 34, served as the Maple Leafs' third-string goalie this season and performed well. In 22 appearances with the Original Six club, he posted a 19-11-8 record, a 2.87 GAA, and a .902 SV%. With numbers like these, he would give the Lightning a bit of an upgrade at the backup goalie role. In addition, they would gain more experience between the pipes, as he is an 11-year veteran.
Jones is unlikely to command much more than a league-minimum deal in free agency, so there would be no actual harm in the Lightning taking a shot on him. At worst, he would be a solid depth goalie for the club when injuries arise.
In 466 career games, split between the Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Philadelphia Flyers, Seattle Kraken, and Leafs, Jones has a 236-171-36 record, a 2.72 GAA, and a .905 SV%.
