Lightning Should Not Target Maple Leafs' Nick Robertson Despite Desire For Forward Depth
The Lightning should look elsewhere now that Robertson has had regular ice time.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are enjoying a strong season and are expected to be buyers as the 2025 NHL trade deadline approaches. To bolster their playoff aspirations, the Bolts would be wise to focus on their defense rather than their forward depth.
Although intriguing option is 23-year-old forward Robertson, who has been at the center of trade rumors since last offseason. Having previously requested a trade, it’s clear that Robertson has helped Toronto's depth when needed.
If the Lightning were to acquire Robertson, he could bring a spark to Tampa Bay's third line. However, the cost to get the player now would come at the cost of picks or a prospect the team can ill afford to give up.
This season, Robertson has recorded eight goals, 12 points, and a plus-1 rating in 39 games. While his numbers are modest, he demonstrated greater offensive potential last season, tallying 14 goals and 27 points over 56 games, making the cost much higher.
Given Tampa Bay’s need for additional skill in their bottom-six forward group, Robertson’s age and upside make him a compelling trade target. However, the cost will likely be more than what t he Lightning will get an up-close look at Robertson tonight as they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.
