This is MacKinnon's second time making First Team honours in his career after making it the first time last season (2023-24). He finished with a total of 731 points to win Center voting, finishing with 85 first-place points, 101 second-place points, and three third-place points. His 85 first-place points trailed Edmonton Oiler Leon Draisaitl, who had 102, but he finished with 38 more second-place votes, beating Draisaitl out barely as he finished with 713 points.
This was another season to remember for MacKinnon, even though he didn't finish at the level he did last season, setting new career highs in goals (51), assists (89), and points (140). It was still a remarkable season for “Nate Dogg”. In 79 games this season, he finished with 32 goals and 84 assists for 116 points, finishing second in the league in total points and tied with Nikita Kucherov for most assists in the league. Most notably, he earned his 1000th career NHL point this season while continuing to climb the all-time ranks in the Avalanche's records.
In Makar’s case, this is his third time being voted onto the First Team. Makar was announced as the Norris Trophy winner after receiving 176 first-place votes out of 191 voters and winning the trophy for the second time in his career. He almost went unanimous as he finished with 186 first-team points and only a single second-place point. He beat his runner-up, Zach Werenski, by over 100 points, as Werenski finished with 838.
Makar set career highs in goals (30) and points (92) this season in astonishing fashion. Scoring 30 goals made him the ninth defenseman in NHL history to score 30 or more goals in a season, and the first since Mike Green with the Washington Capitals in the 2008-09 season. Makar set new NHL career highs this season with 12 power-play goals, two short-handed goals, and 246 shots on goal. He averaged 25:43 of ice time per game, ranking third in the league among all skaters.
