On Tuesday we saw two young players placed on waivers, and now both Calgary's Joni Jurmo and Toronto's Ty Voit have learned their NHL fates on Wednesday after both officially cleared through waivers, becoming free agents.
The NHL's off-season has been slow going thus far with very little to talk about in free agency or on the trade market, but on Tuesday we did get some surprising waiver news.
Both Calgary's Joni Jurmo and Toronto's Ty Voit were officially placed on waivers for the purpose of contract termination, as first reported by the NHL's top Insider Elliotte Friedman.
Now, Friedman has given an update on Wednesday, and to the surprise of no one, both Jurmo and Voit cleared waivers, meaning they will become free agents as they look for their next home in hockey.
Unfortunately for both players, they struggled to light it up in 2024/25, with both players failing to stand out at the ECHL level, and with little interest from NHL teams, there's a chance that this could present both players with an option to go overseas and continue pursuing their NHL dreams.
At 23 and 22 years of age respectively, Jurmo and Voit certainly still have time to start impressing, but with very little production at the professional level thus far, it's safe to say that they've got plenty of improving to do.
Ultimately, there's only so many spots in the AHL and the NHL that not everyone drafted is going to make it, and while there's still a chance that one or both can make a run to the top level, it's not looking good for either after this latest news.
