Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is among several forwards who will not take part in practice on Friday with a lower-body injury, the club announced.

Tavares collided awkwardly with Montreal Canadiens forward Michael Pazzetta in Toronto' period of the club's 2-1 pre-season win on Thursday.

Although Tavares stayed in the game, he was limited to just two shifts in the third period.

"My leg was getting pretty stiff from the hit I took there in the first. It wasn't so bad afterwards but kind of throughout the second and especially in the third it just got really, really stiff and I didn't have much," Tavares said of his limited activity after the game. "I told Craig (Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube) I was just going to keep him short, but I think he just determined to give me the rest of the night off."

Calle Jarnkrok is also set to miss practice and hasn't been on the ice over the last week with a lower-body injury.

Alex Steeves is also out with a lower-body injury.

The Leafs listed all three players as day-to-day.

Leafs defenseman Dakota Mermis was seen getting tended to after being injured in practice on Thursday. The Leafs say the defenseman underwent jaw surgery and will be out week-to-week.

The Leafs signed Mermis to a one-year deal worth $775,000 on July 2,

Tavares' injury is the latest in a series of aches and pains for some of Toronto's top players. Auston Matthews has been day-to-day with an upper-body ailment. William Nylander had to leave Thursday's game he collided with Canadiens defenseman Christian Dvorak following a push-off gone wrong by Nick Robertson.

Neither of Matthews nor Nylander's injuries have been deemed serious by the club.
