The hometown kid is moving on from the Bruins.
Former Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk is leaving his hometown team, as he has signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Seeing Grzelcyk sign elsewhere was entirely predictable. The Massachusetts native notably was scratched during most of the Bruins' playoff games this year. In addition, Mason Lohrei and Parker Wotherspoon took notable steps forward in their developments, making Grzelcyk expendable.
Bruins GM Don Sweeney also wanted to add more size to the club's blueline, which was made apparent by the club signing Nikita Zadorov. As a result, it was simply time for both the Bruins and Grzelcyk to move on.
Grzelcyk will now look to have a bounce-back season with the Penguins from here. It is no secret that the left side of their defense needs a boost, and he could provide them with that. Overall, this a low-risk move that looks good for both the player and the club.
In 445 games as a Bruin, Grzelcyk had 25 goals, 110 assists, 135 points, and a plus-137 rating.
