New Orleans Saints QB Spencer Rattler Is Turning Heads

The New Orleans Saints have been attempting to figure out the quarterback situation ever since franchise quarterback Drew Brees retired. After having the likes of Jameis Winston, Derek Carr, Andy Dalton and Taysom Hill in the mix, it appears that they may have drafted the next quarterback for the future in Spencer Rattler.

According to reports that came out of the Saints minicamp, Rattler is making waves and showcasing his abilities thus far.

Rattler was expected to be an automatic first-round pick entering college football but things did not work out that way. He ended up dropping to the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and was the seventh quarterback selected in the class.

People are expecting to see Rattler on the field during the season if Derek Carr does not look too well under center or if the team gets off to a slow start this season.

Rattler played five years of college football (2019-21 at Oklahoma, 2022-23 at South Carolina) and performed well. Looking at last season, he finished going 275-of-399 (68.9%) for 3,186 yards with 19 touchdowns to eight interceptions.

Thanks to the Saints having impressive players at the skill positions, Rattler may have a bright future in New Orleans.

There were a few reasons why Rattler, who was once thought of as a top quarterback when he began his collegiate career, dropped down to the fifth round.

One of the reported reasons was that his role on Netflix’s “QB1: Beyond the Lights” showcased him in high school having attitude concerns, and those images made some teams a bit more hesitant to trust him to potentially become their franchise quarterback.

Another possible reason was his leadership issues at Oklahoma, as he did not respond well to the benching that occurred. However, he did seemingly develop into a leader with the South Carolina Gamecocks. He was voted team captain in both years with the program.

These NFL teams look through a lot of things in order to determine who to select, especially at the quarterback position. It should be noted that Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer has defended Rattler and refuted such claims about the signal-caller’s immaturity.

It is difficult for people to erase the images of Spencer Rattler from his high school days, but the Saints possibly could reap the benefits as a result.
