Despite the intense love scenes in The Walking Dead, Lauren Cohan and Steven Yeun remained just friends.
Lauren Cohan and Steven Yeun dished on their chemistry and love scenes on the hit post-apocalyptic horror show The Walking Dead. Portraying Maggie and Glenn, the stars also revealed their bond off-screen and if they ever caught feelings for each other.
The famed show officially ended in 2022 after eleven seasons, but fans will always remember this pair of lovers. Originally starting as supporting roles, Maggie and Glenn became significant figures and core team members.
While speaking with Larry King, Lauren Cohan and Steven Yeun talked about the relationship of their characters in The Walking Dead, as well as the possibility of falling in love outside the realms of the show. The host remarked how important chemistry is on screen, and Yeun believed they had that during filming.
When asked about their relationship off-screen, Cohan said, “We’re really good friends.” At the time, Yeun had a partner, and Cohan was single. When prompted by the interviewer if they would date each other if both of them were available, the actress amusingly said, “You’re already pushing the buttons, wow.”
In the show, Maggie and Glenn did a couple of love scenes, a thing Yeun assured his real-life partner was fine with. The actor shared how he also made sure there was nothing awkward between him and his costar. “I make it a thing to feel comfortable with her and she makes everything to feel comfortable with me,” he said.
Cohan, on the other hand, agreed that actors don’t get turned on playing love scenes because apart from the difficulty, it’s also a bit uncomfortable as there are other people in the room. “You want it to be real,” she said, however: “When you watch a film and you feel like the actors are holding back in a love scene, it really cheapens it.”
While many fans were rooting for Maggie and Glenn, it’s a shame that Yeun and Cohan did not end up together in real life. Their chemistry on screen was so convincing and that’s simply because they are professional actors who are great at their job. Unfortunately, Glenn died in Season 7 and Maggie was one of the survivors.
Cohan now leads her own spinoff series The Walking Dead: Dead City which premiered in 2023. A second season has been confirmed after a teaser was revealed at New York Comic Con showing the return of the key characters Maggie and Negan.
The sequel, slated for spring 2025, will most likely pick up after the events in the first installment, with both characters finding themselves trapped on opposing sides in a war for control over Manhattan.
The actress’ decade-long portrayal of Maggie has been an incredible journey, and now that she’s become front and center of the show, it will finally uncover the deeper layers of her personality that we’ve never seen before.
