Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 20, “Cut Me Open” introduced the possibility of even more characters leaving the show, just a few weeks after it was confirmed that Jake Lockett, who plays Sam Carver,,and Daniel Kyri, who plays Darren Ritter, are departing the show at the end of Season 13. But who else is leaving Chicago Fire in 2025?
Who is Leaving Chicago Fire in 2025?
The latest episode had an auditor at Firehouse 51, and though the firehouse passed the audit, near the end of the hour, he delivered some troubling news. Big cuts are coming soon from the city. That means layoffs and forced retirements, with probationary and older firefighters the first to go. Mouch didn’t react well to the news, telling the auditor: “Us old timers are not going anywhere.”
But would that really be something Mouch can choose? Herrmann hasn’t really seemed sure about his Chief test at any point in the process, and though Pascal hasn’t really solidified himself in the position at Firehouse 51, he is the Chief for now. So, Herrman could indeed be out the door when these forced retirements come. Not to mention Mouch is also not getting any younger.
And that’s just adding insult to injury, considering we know Ritter and Carver are leaving and the show has done absolutely nothing to set up their departure, so it’s likely that they’re either getting fired or one or both of them are getting killed off in the finale.
The episode also delivers a devastating blow to Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Kelly Severide’s (Taylor Kinney) relationship — one that could push them out of Firehouse 51 and even Chicago Fire. The same episode that seems to set them up to be parents — the thing they have been waiting for since the beginning of the season — ends in heartbreak after the mother of the child they were planning to adopt changes her mind at the last minute. It’s a devastating turn of events, and one that leaves them both heartbroken. And it might just be leading to an ultimate happy ending for them, but considering that Taylor Kinney has reportedly not yet renewed his contract, there’s always a possibility it doesn’t. Unlikely, but the possibility exists.
When Chicago Fire was renewed for Season 14, the reports indicated the departures of Lockett and Kyri might not be the only ones, so reporte budget cuts in the show may indicate that some other people might also be leaving. The shows are set to have shorter seasons next year, which will presumably take care of some of the financial burden. That means it’s unlikely the show needs to cut someone as big as Taylor Kinney or David Eigenberg. But that doesn’t mean everyone else is safe.
There’s also Cap and Tony, or even Cruz. They all seem like unlikely choices, considering Ritter and Carver are already leaving, and if all the actual firefighters leave, who will be left on Chicago Fire to actually fight fires? But at this point, who knows?
Perhaps the obvious answer to who is leaving is Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney). He doesn’t seem to have let go of his revenge, and the trailer for next week seems to suggest he went after the man who caused the accident that killed his wife, Monica. If he did, he obviously cannot stay. Even if he didn’t, is there any place for him if Herrmann passes the Chief’s test? The answer is no. And Mulroney would surely free up some budget, so there wouldn’t need to be any more cuts. That seems like a good compromise, all things considered.
Chicago Fire is available to stream on Peacock.
