Patrik Laine Scores Again as Canadiens Defeat Ducks in Shootout

Patrik Laine’s resurgence with the Montreal Canadiens continued on Monday night as the Habs secured a 3-2 shootout victory over the Anaheim Ducks at the Bell Centre. Overshadowing Jacob Trouba‘s first game with the Ducks, the win marks Montreal’s third in their last four games, pushing their record to 11-14-3.

Laine, who has been a revelation since returning from injury on December 3, scored his third power-play goal in four games and added his first assist of the season on Kirby Dach’s first goal in 20 games. Laine’s offensive production, combined with a clutch goal in the shootout (along with Cole Caufield), was key to the win.

After the game, Laine said, “Most fun I’ve had in years.” Fans weren’t sure how quickly he would get adjusted to being back in the NHL, but it looks like he’s picked up his power play production like he never missed any time at all. Following the game, Hutson praised Laine’s impact: “He’s a special talent. It’s so fun getting him the puck. He makes the game exciting.”

Speaking of Hutson, the rookie defenseman also made history, setting the Canadiens’ franchise record for the longest point streak by a rookie defenseman. By assisting on Laine’s power-play goal, Hutson extended his streak to seven games, surpassing the previous record of six held by Chris Chelios and Glen Harmon.

Suzuki extended his point streak to seven games, during which he has racked up 10 points.

Canadiens Could Go on a Roll With a Happy Laine

With Laine’s electrifying performances and the team’s improving form, the Canadiens are becoming a must-watch team as they aim to climb the standings. It may be too late to save the season and contend in the playoffs, but it seems clear the Canadiens made a good choice in taking a risk on Laine. He seems comfortable and happy, which is half the battle.
