The Boston Red Sox had one of the worst defenses in baseball last year, committing 115 errors in 2024, the second-most errors in the MLB (behind only the Miami Marlins who committed 117).
However, it wasn't the fault of the outfield, and it certainly wasn't the fault of right fielder Wilyer Abreu, who was rewarded with a Gold Glove for his rookie season.
In 2024, Abreu had 17 defensive runs saved and finished with seven outs above average.
On Saturday, the Red Sox put together a little behind-the-scenes video of Abreu winning the award, which included the 25-year-old sharing just how much it meant for him to receive such an honor.
"It was very exciting," Abreu said. "I felt very emotional and proud for this moment, for this opportunity and for this award I am receiving. It makes me very proud because it shows the fruits of my labor. It is not something that I was expecting. But when I was told that I won, I felt happy and to be able to attend this ceremony is very important for me, my career and my family. And they are super proud of me and my accomplishments so far."
It's not hard to see how much Abreu cares when watching him every night, so it's great to hear him talk about it and get rewarded with such an honor.
