If the Atlanta Falcons could rewind the 2021 draft, there is zero chance they are selecting Kyle Pitts again. Pitts was great in his rookie season and a complete frustration in the three years since. Looking at who should take Kyle's spot two names stand out. A great case can be made for Micah Parsons considering Atlanta's complete lack of a capable pass rush. However, if we're looking to be as accurate as possible there wasn't a high chance Parsons found his way inside the top-five picks. Of the probable selections the best fit is Ja'Marr Chase.
Teams understand when they play the Bengals the one threat to break the game open is Chase. Understanding this and giving Chase so much attention one would think slows the production. Greatness always finds a way, however, and that perfectly defines the early career of Chase. The receiver is seemingly always open and finds a way to make a play when the team needs it most.
It is fun to consider just what this team might accomplish with Chase on the roster once they find a capable quarterback. It isn't going to change Atlanta's fate the past few years, but it does set them up far better than Kyle Pitts has
Pick #40 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Richie Grant |
Azeez Ojulari |
Richie Grant isn't a starting NFL player, and the Falcons found that out the hard way. Ojulari is the perfect fit for a team still in need of a franchise pass rusher. While Ojulari isn't the perfect pass rusher it would have been a perfect fit and a great piece to build around.
Pick #68 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Jalen Mayfield |
Dyami Brown |
Jalen Mayfield is one of the worst draft picks in the history of the Atlanta Falcons. For those that may have forgotten Mayfield couldn't block the air in front of him. Matt Ryan's final season was defined by the guard bringing pressure right into his face and setting the run game up for failure.
Dyami Brown took a long time to find his footing in the league but is a proven depth piece. Since Jayden Daniels took over the receiver has been a surprisingly productive piece of the Washington offense. Heading into the Super Bowl the receiver still leads all pass catchers in total yardage.
Brown and Chase give the Falcons a great duo that is going to be very difficult to match up against. Chase is the typical primary receiver while Brown has proven he is going to be a great fit when put with the right quarterback. Atlanta isn't done on offense, however, finding a way to land the steal of the 2021 draft.
Pick #108 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Darren Hall |
Amon-Ra St. Brown |
Darren Hall is a player never able to make Atlanta's starting rotation. Hall's impact on the franchise is nonexistent with a re-draft leaving no question that Hall isn't a part of Atlanta's class. St. Brown is such a special player that fits the Lions perfectly. It is fair to wonder if the undersized receiver landed elsewhere if he would become the same player.
Still, the idea of having Chase, Brown, and St. Brown all on rookie contracts is far too exciting to pass up. You've solidified your starting receivers for the next half-decade and would have enough talent to elevate even an average quarterback into being a solid starter.
Pick #114 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Drew Dalman |
Drew Dalman |
This is the one selection the Falcons perfectly nailed in the 2021 draft. In a draft filled with misses and unproductive players the Falcons were able to land a starting center late in the class. While Dalman might leave this offseason there is still every reason to make this selection. Dalman's cheap production and impact cannot be overlooked.
Pick #148 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Ta' Quon Graham |
Michael Carter |
Very little remains on the board at this point in what was a very bad second and third day of a draft class. Carter offers the Falcons great secondary depth and a solid piece that has a chance to have a far higher impact than a pass rusher who has been unable to stay on the field.
Pick #182 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Ade Ogundeji |
Avery Williams |
Avery Williams had such a higher level of responsibility and impact under Arthur Smith. The head coach change didn't benefit Williams who was a kick-returner without many great moments still was a contributing piece. At this point in the draft that is all you're looking for is a player with a chance to make the roster.
Pick #183 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Avery Williams |
Damar Hamlin |
Hamlin has quietly developed into a solid starting safety for the Bills. Hamlin gives the Falcons a great potential pairing with Jessie Bates and a player they won't be forced to pay top dollar while being an important piece of the defense.
Pick #187 |
New Selection |
---|---|
Frank Darby |
Trey Smith |
Kansas City is such a well-run organization finding ways to win in free agency and late in the draft. Finding Trey Smith in such an awful draft class and developing him into a great starter along the offensive line speaks to their organization.
Smith would slot well into Atlanta's offensive line and replace Jalen Mayfield in Matt Ryan's final season. Perhaps making the team's offense look far different and giving Ryan a chance at a far more respectable exit.
