Rematch Flyers with Canucks

After a mediocre 1-2-1 start to the 2024-25 season, the Philadelphia Flyers finally return home to the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night after a taxing four-game West Coast road trip. After facing the Vancouver Canucks in Game 1 in Vancouver, the Flyers will host the Canucks this time, with the home-opener kicking off shortly after 7 p.m.

Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks, too, have just one win this season with Elias Pettersson struggling to get going. With Derek Forbort becoming the latest key player in need of replacing in the Canucks’ lineup, the Flyers will be matching up with a very exploitable defense group.

This is important to note because the Flyers have been out-chanced in all four of their games this season and out-attempted in all but one.

There is no better time than the present to get the 5-on-5 offense clicking.

One player who needs to get going the most? Captain Sean Couturier, who sits one point away from 500 on his career and will play in his 800th NHL regular season game against the Canucks on Saturday.

He has one assist and five shots on goal in four games while averaging a career-low 12:46 of ice time.

The Flyers will trot out Sam Ersson between the pipes on Saturday, although he will not be as fresh as head coach John Tortorella would have hoped.

After Kevin Lankinen got the ‘W’ against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Thursday night, it is assumed that Arturs Silovs will start against the Flyers on Saturday night.

And now for some Flyers game notes, or otherwise observations:

Matvei Michkov (2-2-4) has four points in four career games, but all of them (yes, all of them) have come via the power play. Surprisingly, the power play has carried the Flyers to the little success they have had this season, because their 5-on-5 play has been dreadful.

Per Moneypuck, winger Owen Tippett and defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen are the only Flyers players with on-ice expected goals percentages greater than 50%. In layman’s terms, they are the only two guys who have not consistently gotten shelled with scoring chances against.

At the other end of the totem pole, Travis Sanheim (32.9%) and Joel Farabee (26.1%) are the two worst on the team so far. As established players, veterans, and key performers, they need to up their games in this early part of the season.
