The Colts could be looking to deepen their backfield depth by taking an in-person look at a former 4x NFL Pro Bowler.
According to the Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill Jr., the Indianapolis Colts may be bringing in veteran running back Dalvin Cook for a visit soon—following his recent free agency stop with the Dallas Cowboys:
The 29-year-old veteran is a former 4x NFL Pro Bowler with the Minnesota Vikings, having rushed for 6,207 rushing yards on 1,349 carries (4.6 ypc. avg.) to go along with his 47 rushing touchdowns—as well as amassed 1,872 receiving yards, during 88 career games.
That being said, the 7-year NFL veteran is quickly approaching thirty years old and is likely at the twilight of his playing career—should he find the right opportunity to actually extend it.
During 15 games (1 start) for the New York Jets last year, Cook had a very quiet 67 carries for 214 total rushing yards (3.2 ypc. avg.)—before latching on with the Baltimore Ravens for the playoffs. In the Divisional Round against the Houston Texans, he had 8 total carries for 23 total rushing yards (including a 19-yard run on his first carry).
However, Cook is now in reportedly great physical shape, but is the burst and acceleration still there that once made him one of the most feared backs in football?
With top backup Zack Moss having departed in free agency, the Colts aren’t exactly deep at running back behind star workhorse Jonathan Taylor right now—especially with just Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson behind him on the active 53-man roster. Sermon has been recovering from a recent hamstring injury too.
In the passing game, Cook has always been regarded as an asset during his standout playing career and could bring some veteran experience from a pass catching/blocking standpoint behind Taylor to the Colts running back room.
The question is just how much tread is left on the tires to realistically help the Colts backfield?
