In the wake of 9-1-1’s emotional Season 8 finale, fans were left reeling after a tearful farewell that shook the entire 118. Now, star Ryan Guzman, who plays firefighter Eddie Diaz, is opening up about the heartbreaking behind-the-scenes story that made filming the episode one of the most intense experiences of his career.
Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Guzman revealed that the goodbye scene wasn’t just acting—it was personal.
“That moment was real. It wasn’t just about saying goodbye to a character. It felt like we were saying goodbye to a part of ourselves,” he shared.
While he didn’t confirm exactly which character’s exit hit hardest, many fans believe he’s referring to Bobby Nash’s death, which sent shockwaves through the 9-1-1 fanbase. Guzman said the cast was “in tears between takes,” with emotions running high both on and off camera.
“We built a family over the years,” he added. “And when you lose a cornerstone like Bobby, it’s like losing part of your own foundation.”
The scene’s authenticity, he says, came from years of real connection among the cast members, especially between Eddie and Bobby, who shared a deep bond built on mutual respect and personal redemption.
As 9-1-1 heads into Season 9, Guzman promises fans will see a “changed” Eddie—one who is grappling with grief, legacy, and what it means to carry on when the leader is gone.
“You’ll feel Bobby’s presence even in his absence,” he teased.
The finale’s goodbye wasn’t just written—it was felt, and thanks to Guzman’s raw performance, it will remain one of 9-1-1’s most unforgettable moments.
