Sabres Potential Target Is Officially Off the Board

Another potential target for the Buffalo Sabres has found his new home.

It is no secret that the Buffalo Sabres could use another skilled forward on their roster before the start of the season. Because of this, James van Riemsdyk was one free agent left who stood out as a solid potential target for the Sabres to consider. However, that thought can now be forgotten.

According to multiple sources, the Columbus Blue Jackets are signing van Riemsdyk to a one-year, $900,00 contract.

This has the potential to be a good move for the Blue Jackets, as van Riemsdyk should provide the Metropolitan Division club with more depth offensive production. In addition, with the Blue Jackets rebuilding and having many young players, van Riemsdyk could be a good veteran to have around in their room.

When looking at the Sabres' current lineup, it is fair to argue that they could have benefitted from taking a shot on van Riemsdyk. He would have provided them with another solid option for their middle six if signed. In addition, due to his effective net-front presence ability, he would have had the potential to give the Sabres' second power-play unit a nice boost.

van Riemsdyk showed last season with the Boston Bruins that he can still produce pretty well offensively. In 71 games for the Original Six club, he had 11 goals, 27 assists, and a plus-7 rating.

Nevertheless, seeing how van Riemsdyk performs for the Blue Jackets from here will be intriguing. He could have been a solid signing for the Sabres.
