The New Orleans Saints have plenty of decisions left to make regarding their roster this offseason. Kellen Moore will not lack for power, as the roster cut down approaches closer to the regular season.
The Saints made some free agent moves last week, and more could be on the way - depending on multiple tough decisions. One of their former Super Bowl champions recently became available.
Jets move on from punter Thomas Morstead
The veteran boot is back on the free agent market. The New York Jets released Morstead last week and could continue his NFL career.
Morstead has been a fan favorite for his infectious energy and play over both his stints in New York and New Orleans.
Morstead, a Super Bowl champion with the Saints, led the NFL in punts and yardage, and dropped 36-of-99 kicks inside the 20-yard line in 2023. He wasn’t used as frequently last season, but still averaged 47.2 yards per attempt. -- New York Post
Potential return to New Orleans
The Saints have two punters on their current roster. Both of them are young options. Matthew Hayball was the punter for them last season as a rookie, and James Burnip was an undrafted free agent addition earlier this offseason. Neither have had long stays in the pros, and Hayball's first season did hold some inconsistency.
New Orleans could look to add an experienced option, even if it was just to provide competition for those guys. Morstead fits that bill. We'll see if they make the reunion happen.
Bringing back Morstead could be another feel-good move that also makes sense from a production standpoint along their special teams unit. If they do it, they'll have another competition for an open competition for the starting punter role.
