Saints name Jake Haener starting quarterback against Commanders

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The New Orleans Saints have named Jake Haener as their starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

This comes a day after Interim Head Coach Darren Rizzi said he’d name a starter by the end of the week.

Saints rookie Jake Haener is BANNED for breaking NFL's drug rules on the eve of the season - but he insists he 'does not know how the substance got in his body' |

Normal starter Derek Carr is dealing with a fractured hand and remains in the concussion protocol. This move to give Haener the start likely means that Carr will not play Sunday against the Commanders.

A fourth-round pick from Fresno State, Haener will be making his first career NFL start. He has appeared in seven games this season, completing 14 of 29 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown.

Haener was chosen over rookie Spencer Rattler, who went 0-3 as the starter earlier this season during Carr’s absence, throwing for 571 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
