Saints' rising star in trouble: Roderic Teamer suspended for three games for doping puts defence in trouble

The NFL has reportedly handed down some discipline to a member of the Saints' special teams unit.

Today, the league suspended Roderic Teamer three games without pay for violating its substance abuse policy. Teamer is a 27-year-old safety who's currently on New Orleans' practice squad,

The former undrafted free agent was arrested for DUI while suiting up for the Raiders last season and was subsequently cut by the organization shortly after his run-in with the law.

Teamer remained out of the league for the rest of 2023 and most of the offseason before eventually getting an invite to Saints training camp.

The team reportedly signed him knowing that he would likely face a suspension once the NFL concluded its investigation and now he won't be eligible to return until Week 17 against his former team.

Teamer appeared in two games for New Orleans this season where he logged 33 snaps on special teams but didn't register any stats.

If there's any silver lining though it's that Teamer was able to turn his life around following the arrest. According to Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football, Wednesday marks one full year of sobriety for the veteran DB.

The Tulane product wasn't the only defensive player to receive a three-game ban this week either. The NFL also upheld Azeez Al-Shaair's suspension for his hit on Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence.

"Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it, is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL," VP of football operations Jon Runyon wrote. "... Your continued disregard for NFL playing rules puts the health and safety of both you and your opponents in jeopardy and will not be tolerated."

Next up for the 4-8 Saints is a 1 PM ET matchup with the 2-10 New York Giants on FOX.
