Saints' Swiss Army knife is doing things he's 'never done before'

The Saints' Taysom Hill is one of only a few players in the NFL that can line up at several different positions and have success at each one in any given week.

Saints try out a new role for Taysom Hill at OTAs

Over the last seven years, Hill has played quarterback, running back, fullback, outside receiver, slot receiver, halfback and tight end.

However, he says that new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is finding new ways to utilize him.

"It's been a lot of fun," Hill said, via Matthew Paras of nola.com. "It's weird to say after seven years of doing what I've been doing that I'm being asked to do things I've never done before. That is exciting to me, and it's challenging and I love to be challenged like that. I'm grateful for those guys creating unique and fun opportunities for me."

In 2023, Hill threw for 83 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 401 yards and four touchdowns and had 33 catches for 291 yards and two touchdowns.

Some would argue there aren't any other ways to use Hill, but Kubiak disagrees as the Swiss Army knife has been impressive in practice.

"Taysom has been phenomenal here early," Kubiak said at rookie minicamp. "We've been kind of moving him in a lot of spots as he has his entire career. He's a really intelligent guy, and we're looking forward to giving him a lot of volume early. And then we'll start narrowing it down as we get closer to the season."

If New Orleans can find new ways to use Hill, it will only make its offense more difficult to defend in 2024. The 33-year-old may not be as fast as he used to be, but he's still more willing than ever to do whatever he can to help the Saints win.

"The more we can do, the better and harder it is," Hill finished.

Kubiak was San Francisco's passing game specialist last season when fullback Kyle Juszczyk made his eighth consecutive Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro for the first time. Maybe Hill will have a similar impact in New Orleans this season.
