The 2024 Minnesota Vikings season was a massive success through the first 16 games. They went 14-2 and had a chance to clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a week 18 win in Detroit against the Lions. Unfortunately, that didn't come to fruition, as the Vikings scored just 18 total points in their final two games to end the season.
Sam Darnold talks about end of Vikings season
There were a lot of reasons why the Vikings weren't able to get it done at the end of the season. The biggest reason was the performance of the offense, specifically the offensive line. Quarterback Sam Darnold opened up about the end of the season with The Athletic, taking a lot of blame, and how he knows that he still has to prove himself.
“For lack of a better term, we laid an egg as an offense,” Darnold said in an interview with The Athletic following a minicamp practice last week. “And I think, for me personally, that sucks. I felt like we were a really good team, but at the end of the day — and this is gonna sound a little pessimistic — but when you get to the end of it and you don’t win the whole thing, you failed.
“I feel like I could have played way better, to be completely honest with you. I feel I didn’t play up to my standard. I truly feel that way. I feel like if I would have just played better, I would’ve been able to give the team a chance.”
It's no secret that the Vikings struggled to end the season, but the why is more important.
The offensive line, as described earlier, was in dire straits. Not having Chrisitan Darrisaw finally caught up to them after winning nine-consecutive games. The other aspect that didn't end up working out was what Darnold said: he didn't play well enough.
For whatever reason, things didn't click for Darnold like they did the first 16 games. He seemed to play a significantly different style. He was very indecisive and making poor decisions. It raised a lot of questions as to what Darnold will be moving forward, and he's got a chance to prove himself once again in Seattle.
The first step to fixing a problem is admitting there was one, and Darnold certainly is on his way.
