In a move few fans saw coming, the New Orleans Saints have officially released defensive tackle Ryder Anderson, marking a surprising shift in their defensive line plans heading into the 2025 season.

Anderson, who joined the Saints last year and provided solid rotational depth in the trenches, was expected by many to compete for a bigger role this season. However, with recent draft picks and free agent additions bolstering the defensive front, Anderson became the odd man out.

Sources close to the team say the release was based more on roster flexibility than performance. Anderson, known for his high motor and versatility, was a respected presence in the locker room. His departure, however, clears cap space and opens a roster spot for younger talent to emerge during OTAs and training camp.

The 6-foot-6, 276-pound lineman originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants before making his way to New Orleans. While he never became a household name, Anderson earned praise from coaches for his work ethic and willingness to do the dirty work on early downs.

Fans on social media are split — some upset by the decision, others acknowledging the team’s need to prioritize long-term growth. With teams around the league still shaping their rosters, Anderson may not be on the market for long. Several defensive-line-needy franchises could see value in a player with his experience and upside.

As the Saints look to refine their identity under head coach Dennis Allen, tough personnel decisions like this one will likely continue. For Anderson, it’s a new chapter — and perhaps a new opportunity — just around the corner.
