Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Gets an Exciting Production Update

As fans eagerly await the premiere of the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on July 17, one of the show’s directors is sharing an update on the fourth season of the Paramount+ series. Strange New Worlds’ director Jordan Canning took to Instagram to share a filming update.

Canning’s post was “liked” by series stars Melissa Navia and Celia Rose Gooding, who play Eric Ortegas and Nyota Uhura, respectively. The fourth season of the show started filming in early March 2025.

SNW Will End After 5 Seasons

In June, Paramount+ revealed that Strange New Worlds, which follows the crew of Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) U.S.S. Enterprise, would end after its fifth season. The fifth season is expected to be shorter and will consist of six episodes.

Season 3 will pick up with the conclusion of the Enterprise’s encounter with the villainous Gorn. The Gorn are notably different from the species William Shatner’s Captain James T. Kirk encountered in the first season of Star Trek in an episode titled “Arena.”

Showrunner on “Retconning” the Gorn

Strange New Worlds’ showrunner Akiva Goldsman previously touched on why he wanted to make t

he Gorn scarier than they first appeared in the original Star Trek series. “What I loved about the Gorn was it was an opportunity to retcon something into a real monster. What we do in Star Trek - and you’ll see we’ll even do it with the Gorn - is we start by seeing the other, and often we end by engaging our empathy and understanding common ground,” Goldsman said.

“And that’s great, and it doesn’t mean that there isn’t real evil in this world. And so what we wanted to do with the Gorn was to give you a monster, and a monster that at least at first, seemed irredeemable,” he added.

A New TOS Series in the Future?

Although Strange New Worlds may be wrapping up after five seasons, the showrunners teased that it may not be the end for the crew of the Enterprise, saying that the characters on the show could continue to evolve.

“How do they become who they are? What happens to some of them? Those are the questions that we knew we needed to answer and promise to answer,” Goldsman said of having five total seasons to wrap things up. “And then we run into TOS (Switching to a conspiratorial tone). But they’re not dying. And we have those sets,” Goldsman teased.

Strange New Worlds will premiere its third season on July 17 on Paramount+.
