Stephen A. Smith is not a new face in Port Charles, but every time the sports broadcaster appears on General Hospital, it leaves a new group of fans reeling.

The 57-year-old ESPN talking head appeared on the April 28 episode of the ABC soap opera as Brick, the discreet everything-man who is often employed by Sonny (Maurice Benard).

Brick arrived at the hospital where Sonny was being treated just in time to save the mob boss’ life, as an assassin posing as a nurse was scheming to take him out.

“Sorry to interrupt, but I’m gonna need to see some ID,” Brick said as he walked into the hospital room.

The nurse was about to inject something presumably lethal into Sonny’s bloodstream, but Brick again demanded to see her ID “now.”

“Of course,” the nurse said, but as she turned, she pulled a gun out of her scrubs instead of an ID — but Brick was faster than she was, and he shot her first.

As the nurse-slash-assassin lay lifeless on Sonny’s hospital bed, Brick made a call. “Yeah, I got a body here you guys might be interested in,” he said.

Smith made his first appearance as Brick on the soap opera in 2016 and has been the Corinthos family’s surveillance and tech expert ever since.

Though he rarely speaks out about the role, he did defend it — and the soap itself — when Chris “Mad Dog” Russo appeared on First Take in 2023.

“Nobody cares about General Hospital, Steve. And nobody watches it,” Russo told him in the segment, prompting Smith to hit back.

“First of all, General Hospital [is a] multiple-time Emmy Award winners, big-time soap opera. That and Young and the Restless are the top two soap operas, been that way for decades,” Smith said.

He also revealed that he gets “Stopped everywhere in the country because of Brick — surveillance expert for the mob.”
