Steve Mears is leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins radio play-by-play to return to TV. He announced via Twitter Tuesday that he’ll be the new television play-by-play broadcaster for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In 2017, the Pittsburgh native ascended to his dream job, the TV play-by-play for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Mears, a graduate of Franklin Regional High School, had returned home to the coveted position, which lasted for six seasons.
Last summer, the revamped Penguins organization made media changes and eventually swapped Mears and radio voice Josh Getzoff. The team also let go of long-time TV color analyst Bob Errey, replacing him with a rotating cast of former Penguins, including Colby Armstrong and Mike Rupp.
Mears returned to the radio side to positive reviews.
It was his second stint on Penguins radio. He worked on the Penguins radio network and contributed to the Penguins 24/7 network from 2009-2012 before leaving for the NHL Network. He returned for the 2017-18 season and was known for his smooth delivery.
