Kailyn Lowry opened up about a health scare she recently went through with her 2-year-old son Rio after she discovered what she thought was a hernia on his stomach.
Kailyn Lowry is detailing a nightmare experience as a mother.
The Teen Mom star—mom to Elliott, 15, Lincoln, 11, Lux, 7, Creed, 4, Rio, 2, and twins Verse and Valley, 21 months—recently shared that her 2-year-old will need a procedure to remove a mysterious growth on his stomach.
“He developed what I thought was a little hernia above his bellybutton,” Kailyn, 33, explained on a July 21 episode of her Coffee Convos podcast with Lindsie Chrisley, noting she first thought it had developed from swim lessons. “Because he has to roll over and float on his back, I thought the stress of that created this little lump that looked like a hernia.”
And Kailyn—who shares Rio, as well as her twins, with ex-fiancé Elijah Scott—noted that a doctor confirmed her theory that it was a hernia, but she became worried when it didn’t improve after several months.
“Over the last couple weeks, I’ve noticed this protruding out of his abdomen,” she explained. “So, I texted Elijah and I’m like, ‘Hey, I’ve got to call the pediatrician and get him in for this because at this point, it’s worse than it was last year.’”
Kailyn noted that when she brought Rio in more recently, the pediatrician immediately confirmed that Rio’s bump was not a hernia after all, and scheduled her son for an ultrasound.
“Then the ultrasound came back and they were like, ‘This is definitely not a hernia,’” she recalled, adding that the notes back included a possible diagnosis of a neoplasia, or tumor. “Obviously as a mom, my stomach sank.”
While her son is going to get the care he needs, Kailyn emphasized for her listeners to not repeat her own mistake.
“I say all this to say, when it comes to your health check everything out,” she explained. “I really thought it was a hernia this whole time.”
Indeed, Kailyn expressed disappointment in putting her faith in one doctor’s opinion.
“They told me it was going to resolve itself, I didn’t ask anyone for a second opinion,” she added. “Now I’m like, mom guilt and the fact that neoplasia can’t be ruled out just freaks me out.”
And while Kailyn is confident that her son is going to be fine, she wanted to share the story as a “PSA” for her fanbase. As she put it, “Isn’t that scary?”
