The Last of Us fans aren’t particularly happy with the next entry in the franchise already, but at least they can’t blame Naughty Dog for it this time around…
HBO’s second season of The Last of Us had a bit of a, uhh… mixed reception, to put things lightly.
While the critics may have liked it, the public’s score on Rotten Tomatoes paints a very different picture, and it seems that the fanbase has already checked out in regards to the upcoming third season.
Over in a thread on the r/thelastofus subreddit criticising HBO for “stretching part 2 across 3 seasons for maximum profit”, all of the comments are from users stating that they won’t be bothering with the show’s next season.
“I’m done with this series”, commented user Brilliant-Bee-9471.
“Season two was poorly executed and I’m not interested in seeing if it gets better.”
“I initially thought it made sense to make it two seasons so they could really flesh out the story. I also initially assumed that since the plan was to make two more seasons, they were likely to film them back to back”, replied user NaiadoftheSea.
“Boy, was I wrong. I was not expecting only 3 episodes dedicated to Seattle and 4 episodes dedicated to Jackson. I was also not expecting this two year break in between seasons.”
Yeah, well… fair enough.
Look, I really liked the first season of The Last of Us, but I absolutely get why people are already done with the show.
There was a pretty straightforward, good story to adapt in The Last of Us Part II for the second season, and it’s a bit weird how much they chose to go off script– especially when it was all to the story’s detriment.
I’ll be watching the third season regardless (and not just because I kind of have to for my job), but it’s hard to judge anyone for tapping out at this point.
