The Rangers Reportedly On Connor McDavid's Short List Of Destinations If He Wants To Depart From Edmonton

Since the Edmonton Oilers lost in the Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers for the second consecutive year, there’s been more speculation than ever regarding Connor McDavid’s future.

McDavid is set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, but he could sign a contract extension with the Oilers in the coming weeks and commit to the franchise long-term.

However, in the case that McDavid wants a change of scenery there are reportedly a few teams that are speculated to be on his shortlist and the New York Rangers are one of them.

“If and when McDavid ever leaves, it’s a short list of markets that I believe would be a fit for him: L.A., the New York Rangers, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Dallas Stars, etc. It would not be a free-for-all, with 25 teams getting a chance at it,” The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun wrote.

This remains a longshot, as it’s unclear whether McDavid even wants to leave Edmonton; for now, this scenario is just hypothetical.

The Rangers cleared a significant amount of cap space over the past year and have put themselves in a position to potentially land a superstar-caliber player in the future.

New York is also an attractive market for a player the likes of McDavid on top of some of the contending pieces the Rangers already have in their arsenal, which makes them a more attractive destination.

More clarity about McDavid’s future should come to light over the next few weeks with the offseason underway.
