The New Orleans Saints have officially entered a new era, hiring Kellen Moore as the team’s head coach this offseason. Moore is fresh off a Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he’s now determined to get New Orleans there, quickly. The Saints haven’t made the postseason in four years, though, so Moore has his work cut out for him.
While his expertise will be on display during the season, championship moves are first made in the offseason. Before becoming a champion with on-field play, teams have to build championship rosters. What the Saints accomplish in the draft and free agency this offseason will play a big role in determining how far they can go.
With New Orleans having the worst cap situation in the entire league, the franchise won’t only be deciding which players to add, it has to determine which players need to leave. Recently, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports gave the Saints a dramatic suggestion, encouraging the team to move on from several longtime veterans.
In a piece looking at every NFC team’s needs, Podell said it’s time for New Orleans to move on from guys like Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, Tyrann Mathieu, and Taysom Hill, arguing it’d be in the best interest of the franchise.
"In order for the Saints to really get out of NFL purgatory, they'll need to let to rip off the Band-Aid and cut a slew of veterans in order to free up cap space and let young guys develop, for better or worse, in 2025. Cameron Jordan, Taysom Hill, Demario Davis, Ryan Ramczyk and Tyran Mathieu simply don't make sense for the Saints anymore at their respective ages and costs for a New Orleans franchise that hasn't reached the playoffs since 2020 when Drew Brees was last in uniform."Garrett Podell (CBS Sports)
CBS Sports says Saints should move on from their core veterans
Considering the state of New Orleans as a franchise, it’s hard to argue with this suggestion from Podell; many have made this suggestion to the Saints in the last few years. However, the sentiment will likely be ignored just as it was in year’s past.
It has already been reported that New Orleans is planning to keep Derek Carr for another year, and that’s the biggest sign that things will be more of the same for the Saints. With all of these core veterans entering the final year or two of their contracts, New Orleans will probably be content letting them play out their deals.
