The Walking Dead: Dead City has been renewed for a third season at AMC, with former franchise writer and producer Seth Hoffman as showrunner!
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 concluded a few weeks back, and AMC has already renewed the New York-based spinoff for a third outing.
While the season 2 finale ended with a conclusive montage, leading some fans to believe that the show had ended completely, it still left the door open for more episodes. The power struggles within the zombie-infested island of Manhattan are still mostly unresolved, and both Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) are alive. As long as they're still living, there's always more story to tell.
However, there's already a big change behind the scenes. Ahead of season 3, series creator Eli Jorné will step down as showrunner. But don't fear, for the position of showrunner is being filled by long-time Walking Dead writer and producer Seth Hoffman, best known for his writing credits on iconic episodes like "Too Far Gone," "JSS," and "No Way Out."
In season 3, both Maggie and Negan work together to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the beginning of the outbreak. But naturally, things begin to derail when chaos in the city arises.
"We’re thankful to Eli Jorné for two seasons of Dead City that took the story of these iconic characters in exciting new directions and broadened this thriving Universe by introducing a new corner of the walker apocalypse,” AMC Studios president of entertainment Dan McDermott said in a statement. “As we continue to create new stories for a passionate TWD fanbase, we're delighted to have a seasoned Walking Dead veteran like Seth Hoffman at the helm of a new season, alongside the remarkable Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, that will bring new adversaries and alliances and push the boundaries of Maggie and Negan’s conflicted relationship.”
In addition, Hoffman himself weighed in on the opportunity to step back into the franchise:
"“I'm excited to have the chance to dive back into The Walking Dead Universe and work to deliver another dynamic season’s worth of stories to this epic franchise. It's a true honor to chart out the next chapter for Maggie and Negan's iconic adventures in Dead City. Lauren, Jeffrey and Scott are incredible creative partners and I'm thrilled to collaborate with them to bring this story to life.” "
Season 3 begins production in Boston in the fall. No release date has been set. Watch this space.
In the meanwhile, the third season of Daryl Dixon, a Walking Dead spinoff following Daryl and his platonic life partner Carol as they travel through zombie-ridden Europe, premieres on AMC on September 7. The main Walking Dead show ended in 2022, but it doesn't always feel like it because these spinoffs have been coming out pretty regularly; we also can't forget the Rick-and-Michonne show The Ones Who Live. Some fans may say that the hype around all things Walking Dead has diminished over the years, but clearly enough people are watching for AMC to keep renewing these shows.
