It wasn’t a “masterpiece” but a win is a win in the Vegas Golden Knights’ 5-4 shootout against the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday at Wells Fargo Center.
The win improved the Golden Knights to 14-6-2 on the year.
“A lot of credit to the guys tonight. [We] stuck with it,” Vegas forward Jack Eichel said. “Not every game is going to be a masterpiece, but you’ve got to find a way to get two points. We did that tonight. Happy to get the win.”
Here are three takeaways from the game:
After giving up four goals on the first 14 shots, Vegas goalie Ilya Samsonov stymied the Flyers, making the next 18 saves, including some big breakaway stops in the third period and in overtime.
The Golden Knights have gotten excellent goaltending during the road trip thus far, and it has shown in the win column.
“[Samsonov] made some big saves,” Golden Knights forward Tanner Pearson said. “A couple of last wins here, our goalies have kept us in and gave us a chance. Hats off to him. It was nice to help him out on the other side as well.”
Eichel and his linemate Ivan Barbashev took over the game midway through the second period to help bring the Golden Knights back into the game. Barbashev delivered a no-look backhanded pass to Eichel, who scored from the top of the slot at 7:42 of the second period to make it 3-1.
Eichel returned the favor less than four minutes later, feeding Barbashev for a goal that made it 3-2. It gave the Golden Knights life and belief they could come back in the game.
Ultimately, it was goals by Pavel Dorofeyev on the power-play and Pearson in the third period who helped complete the comeback.
They killed off two critical penalties late in the third and in overtime, and Eichel scored the lone goal in the shootout to help secure Vegas’s third straight win on the road.
“At the end of the day, it’s 3-0, and it’s easy to sort of say, ‘Let’s move on and get ready for the next one,’” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “The guys dug in. I didn’t think we were far behind with our ability to catch up. We have goal-scorers in the room. … It was a game we were way too loose to expect to win anything playing like that. Some nights over the course of 82, those happen. We were able to come out on the right side.”
