Tyler Baltierra opened up about what led to his and his wife, Catelynn Lowell‘s eldest child, Carly’s 2009 adoption.
E! News reported that during “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” season 2, episode 19, Baltierra said he did not feel ready to be a parent, largely because his father, Butch, was absent due to being incarcerated.
“With just not having my dad around, it has a lot to do with why I even placed Carly in the first place. I was just so scared to screw it up,” said Baltierra.
Baltierra clarified that he now has better understanding of his father, who had substance abuse issues.
“The older I get, the more love I actually have for my dad. Because I have my own kids and I just know that, like, he was younger than me and he didn’t have half the resources that I had, so you can’t hold too much against him,” said Baltierra during the “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” episode.
He also said that he and Lowell focused on healing themselves following both of their difficult childhoods before they welcomed their other children, Novalee, Vaeda, and Rya.
Tyler Baltierra Says He & His Wife Have Paused Their Attempts to Communicate With Carly
During “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” season 2, episode 17, Lowell and Baltierra expressed their frustration that Carly’s adoptive parents, Teresa and Brandon Davis, blocked them from communicating with the 15-year-old. While speaking to Dawn Baker, who facilitated Carly’s adoption, Lowell said she will continue to try to contact Carly. Baker said, however, that she believed it would be in Carly’s best interest if the couple took a break from attempting to communicate with her.
Baltierra updated fans about his and his wife’s attempts to contact Carly in a February 2025 Instagram Story, as reported by OK! magazine. According to Baltierra, he and Lowell “have taken Dawn’s advice & have since stopped sending gifts & updates.” He said, however, that they have set up an email account for Carly, which they will give her access to in the future.
“We write to it often, so that way when she’s older & if/when she reaches out, we can give her the password for her to read at her discretion. We only want her to have what we believe she deserves & that’s the truth,” said the MTV personality in his Instagram Story.
He also said that he and his wife will understand if Carly “wants nothing to do with [them].”
Catelynn Lowell Said She Has Been Focused on Speaking to Other Adoptees
During a February 2025 interview with Us Weekly, alongside her “Teen Mom: The Next Chapter” castmates, Maci Bookout and Leah Messer, Lowell said Carly’s parents “basically closed the adoption on” her and her husband. She said that the lack of communication with Carly has caused her to focus on speaking to other adoptees.
“I have kind of just jumped into this new place with my adoption where I’m speaking to lots of adoptees. And I’m learning like what would have helped them,” said Lowell during the Us Weekly interview.
