The United States mounted a huge comeback in the third period Monday against Slovakia at the World Championship.
It earned the U.S. one point, but Slovakia skated away with two after Milos Kelemen scored at 3:56 of overtime against Trey Augustine, the Detroit Red Wings prospect and Michigan State product.
Augustine stopped 8-of-9 shots after entering the game at 8:47 of the second period, replacing former Red Wing Alex Nedeljkovic, who allowed four goals on 16 shots. Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon suffered a left hand injury in Saturday’s 6-1 victory over Germany and is out for the tournament.
Shane Pinto, Brady Tkachuk and Luke Hughes (3:22 remaining) scored in the third period, enabling Team USA to erase a 4-1 deficit and send it to overtime.
Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry had three shots on goal and a minus-1 rating in 12:10.
The U.S. has four points (1-0-1-1, W-OTW-OTL-L). Slovakia has five points (1-1-0-1).
The Americans have two days off before facing France on Thursday (2:20 p.m. ET, NHL Network).

Sweden 6, Germany 1: Andre Burakovsky scored a goal and added two assists as Sweden improved to 3-0-0-0 (nine points). Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond did not figure in the scoring, logging 19:15 and finishing with one shot on goal and a minus-1 rating. Germany is 1-0-0-2 (three points).
Finland 4, Norway 1: Oliver Kapanen and Arttu Hyry scored two goals each for Finland for former Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Harri Sateri stopped 13-of-14 shots. Red Wings defenseman Olli Maatta had no points, two shots on goal and an even plus-minus rating in 19:22.
