The San Francisco 49ers' receiver room is an unbridled mess right now.
Brandon Aiyuk is still rehabbing a gruesome knee injury he suffered in Week 8 of last season and is not likely to be ready by the season-opener.
Breakout star Jauan Jennings is in the middle of a contract dispute with the organization. Veteran DeMarcus Robinson is waiting to hear back from the NFL about a potential suspension for a DUI in November. Second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall is currently battling a hamstring injury. And on Wednesday, Jacob Cowing pulled his hamstring and will be out of practice for an unknown period of time.
It is a lot to process, and puts the 49ers in a compromising position if the issues persist. Thankfully, veteran receiver Gabe Davis is openly expressing his interest in joining San Francisco amid the crisis.
During an appearance on "Up & Adams" with Kay Adams, Davis spoke candidly about his recent visit with the 49ers and shared his interest in joining the team.
“I went on a visit there. It was awesome. I have a lot of teammates from UCF and previous players [he played with] like Mac Jones and Isaiah Hodgins there. So, [the 49ers are] definitely a team I’m interested in, for sure. San Fran is a nice spot," said Davis.
"It’s a great team with great players. Talked to Christian [McCaffrey], George [Kittle], and a lot of people out there. It's awesome. San Fran is definitely a spot that I’m looking at. [Head Coach Kyle] Shanahan is the man and knows how to call an offense. They just got a lot of great weapons around there.”
Adams then pressed Davis by saying San Francisco needs a deep ball threat, to which the receiver responded by doubling down on his desire to don the Red and Gold.
“Those guys have been making some plays. Jennings was making hella plays when he had to. It was awesome to watch. You know, Aiyuk is a stud and a true No. 1 player. I got a lot of respect for his game. So, definitely a team that interests me cause I like to be around great players like that. It’s definitely a great opportunity.”
Davis missed the second half of last season after suffering a torn meniscus and was subsequently cut in the offseason by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He finished 2024 with 20 receptions, 239 yards and two touchdowns.
It is unknown what Davis’ asking is at this point in the offseason, but the 49ers should keep a close eye on the veteran. While they may want to give rookie Jordan Watkins and others an opportunity to shine before scouring the receiver market again, Davis could be a solid plug-and-play option with high upside.
