“We Did Think About It a Lot”: ‘Chicago P.D.’ Showrunner Reveals Why She Killed Off a Major Character in the Season 12 Finale

Chicago P.D.'s Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) has squared off against various foes throughout his career, but Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy) would perhaps go down as the trickiest one yet.

Given his impeccable track record of rooting out corrupt superiors, the odds were in Voight's favour, heading into the finale. However, it was still uncertain how Voight would surmount his latest opponent until the final moments. In the end, Voight beat Reid at his own game. By exposing his misdeeds to their right ears, Voight orchestrated Reid's murder. Reid is gunned down by Rennie, the son of drug dealer Otero, seeking revenge for his father's death. It's later revealed that Voight got involved by tipping Rennie off on Reid's location. Interestingly, showrunner Gwen Sigan has now revealed that Reid’s death wasn’t the only possible outcome the writers considered for his downfall.

"He's such a good antagonist for Voight, and he is just a great actor, such a professional, and was always reliable. We did think about it a lot. We couldn't find the perfect way. It just felt like this is what it was all leading to. But we did think about it, because we like the actor so much as well."

Despite his best efforts, Voight slipped back into his old habits in the Season 12 finale, reverting to unethical methods he's long tried to leave behind. Chief Reid acted as his mirror, reflecting the morally gray tactics Voight has occasionally used to get results. In his final moments, Reid throws the accusation in Voight’s face, telling him, "You're worse than me." As Sigan explains, the comment rolls off his back. "Voight is so interesting because I don't think he processes really like a normal human being. In that moment, I think he was able to brush it aside pretty quickly."

However, when the dust settles, Sigan notes that Reid's dying words will occasionally course through Voight's mind, adding, "But it's one of those things that is going to haunt him a little bit. And we've seen that he's become a bit more self-reflective, whether he wants to admit that or not." She adds:

"I think last season, dealing with having almost died the previous season, he was on this quest of almost, 'What more can I have in my life?' and he has almost taken a step backwards. And so I think that those words are going to keep coming up in his head, even if it's just in his subconscious."

As for what comes next, fans can rest assured that Voight and the Intelligence Unit will reassemble as Chicago P.D. has officially been renewed for Season 13. Stay tuned for updates on what’s to come.
