The Boston Bruins have found themselves near the bottom of NHL prospect pools as the season approaches in two months. Recent call-ups Mason Lohrei, Matt Poitras, and John Beecher are now most likely on the NHL roster, leaving the pool of young players a little thin yet again. As the 2024-25 season nears, here are players’ destinations within the Boston Bruins organization from the 2021 NHL Draft.
2021 Draft
Fabian Lysell (1st Round) – The offensively gifted winger had his best AHL season in 2023-24 with 15 goals and 35 assists. However, injury issues, including concussion problems, kept Lysell out of the lineup at times. Entering training camp, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound forward has every opportunity to crack the Bruins roster as a second-line right wing. Lysell is one impressive camp away from being an NHL player. Look for Lysell to start the season in Providence but become a mid-season call-up at some point.
Brett Harrison (3rd Round) – The 21-year-old is almost a forgotten man in the Bruins organization as, last season, Harrison produced just five goals and nine assists in 47 games with the Providence. However, the 2021 third-round draft pick had three points in two playoff games and showed signs of acclimating himself to the pro game. This will be a big season in Providence for Harrison if he has any aspirations of being a Boston Bruin in the future.
Philip Svedeback (4th Round) – The Providence College goalie will head into his junior season with the Friars. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound netminder saw his numbers slip slightly last season (2.32 GAA, .900 save percentage) and could be eligible to sign an entry-level contract with Boston after this college hockey season.
Oskar Jellvik (5th Round) – Jellvik had a breakout year for the Boston College Eagles last season and projects to be a top-line forward. Last season, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound left wing scored 13 goals with 29 assists in 41 games, a 25-point jump from his freshman season. All eyes will be on Jellvik continuing his ascension to top prospect level for the Bruins.
Ryan Mast (6th Round) – Mast split time with Providence and Maine of the ECHL last season. There might not be room for Mast with the AHL club this season so expect the 6-foot-5, 220-pound defenseman to be with the Maine Mariners to start the 2024-25 season.
Andre Gasseau (7th Round) – Gasseau has been teammates with Jellvik with the Eagles and enters his junior year as well. The 21-year-old has had back-to-back 29-point seasons and should be linemates again with Jellvik and Ryan Leonard, the 2023 eighth-overall pick of the Washington Capitals. Bruins’ 2024 first-round pick Dean Letourneau will also suit up for Boston College.
Ty Gallagher (7th Round) – Gallagher has played the last three seasons with the Boston University Terriers and will spend his fourth collegiate season with Colorado College. The defenseman registered three goals and 18 assists during the 2022-23 season but saw his production drop to 0-5-5 in 37 games last season.
There are still some high-end prospects in the 2021 draft class for the Boston Bruins, but Lysell will be the main focus as he looks to crack the NHL lineup.
