You Have to See Tom Schwartz's Unexpected Reunion with Katie Maloney's Mom

Find out where the Vanderpump Rules alum stands with his ex-mother-in-law, Teri Maloney.

We’ve all heard the old saying, “When you marry someone, you marry their family.” But does that “package deal” notion also apply to divorce? Not for Tom Schwartz.

Less than three years after finalizing his split from Katie Maloney, the Vanderpump Rules alum reunited with her mother, Teri Maloney. The two came together on Saturday, March 22, when Tom stopped by Katie and Ariana Madix’s sandwich shop, Something About Her.

Teri shared the special reunion in an Instagram photo of her, Tom, and Tom’s brother Robert “Bert” Schwartz posing by the merch section.

Viewers received insight into Tom and Teri’s relationship in Vanderpump Rules Season 10, Episode 14 (May 2023), which explored the early stages of Katie and Ariana’s sandwich shop. The two hosted a teaser event that included an afterparty at SUR, where Tom had a sweet heart-to-heart with his former mother-in-law.

“I miss you, Teri,” he said. “We had so much fun the last time we hung out… Just as hard as it was to break up with Katie, just to know that I’m not going to be spending holidays with you.” 

Teri reassured Tom he would always “be family," but was disappointed he had kissed one of his castmates — something he promised Katie he would never do. 

“You know what? You blew it,” Teri added. “Of course, you’re going to date other people, but you [and Katie] had a mutual agreement: nobody in the friend group. I just want you to understand that it was kind of a real slap in the face. That is so hurtful to any woman.”

Tom and Katie legally married in 2019, several years after their dreamy wedding ceremony in Northern California. Katie — who began dating Tom in 2011 — announced their separation in early 2022, confirming she was the one who initiated the split.

“There wasn’t some kind of crazy incident that happened. There wasn’t some crazy fight that resulted in this,” Maloney said in the March 18, 2022 episode of her You’re Going to Love Me podcast. “Again, it was my decision, which was probably the hardest and most painful decision I’ve ever had to make.

“The best and only way I can describe it is just like waking up inside of my life and having this voice that just became louder and louder,” she continued. “And just events in my life and in our relationship coming into focus and feeling the weight of them on me.”

Katie is now in a relationship with Nick Martin, a rock musician she met through a mutual friend. Tom recently met his ex-wife's new beau and shared his first impressions of the guitarist.
