Stephanie Arcila is confirmed to be leaving the show, although Gabriela (Arcila) will still likely return at some point in a recurring capacity. Meanwhile, it's not confirmed yet, but it is rumored that Billy Burke will be leaving alongside her. I am worried about the future of Fire Country now, especially after a number of surprising storylines this season. Ultimately, though, I still really enjoy the show, and I am rooting for it to return to the intense and emotional firefighting drama that it once was. Now is the perfect time to reflect on the series as we go into Season 4, so let me just say that I love Fire Country, but these 7 things about the show still make no sense to me.
I was expecting Vince's heart problems to continue in Season 3, even though he was doing better. Oddly, though, Fire Country just dropped this storyline completely. Vince's main storyline this season was worrying about his father's health, and dealing with the difficult decision of putting Walter into a home, while also grappling with his past anger at Walter. In the wake of that, Fire Country failed to mention Vince's heart problems again this season, and had him working again like nothing had happened.
One of the most heartbreaking storylines in Fire Country was when Bode (Max Thieriot) went back to prison in the Season 1 finale. Even two seasons later, while Bode is out of prison and Three Rock, this decision continues to affect the show. It is the reason why he and Gabriela broke up, and now, they won't even get back together unless it's during a brief guest appearance from Arcila down the line. This was a huge turning point for Fire Country, but when you look too closely at the storyline, it doesn't make very much sense.
Now, in retrospect, Fire Country obviously had Manny (Kevin Alejandro) sent to Three Rock so it could still keep a focus there and allow for Bode to be released. This never made sense to me, because the show could have focused on Three Rock without one of the main characters being stuck there, through Eve (Jules Latimer). Another solution would have been to promote Cole (Tye White) as a main character.
What really never made sense was Manny going back to Three Rock just for punching Luke (Michael Trucco). I understand that he had to be extra careful because he was formerly incarcerated, but Luke quickly dropped the charges, and the two are both close to Vince and Sharon. Surely, if Luke could have pulled strings to let Bode become a firefighter, he could have kept Manny out of Three Rock.
Bode and Gabriela's love story has been a major part of Fire Country since the very beginning of the show. After Bode dumped Gabriela while he was back in prison, they faced a number of obstacles, like her almost marrying Diego (Rafael de la Fuente). When Gabriela left Diego at the altar for Bode, it seemed like the perfect chance for Fire Country to bring her and Bode back together. Instead, though, the show seemed to permanently end things for them.
Although it wasn't always handled well, Gabriela's depression storyline made a lot of sense to me. Her guilt about the wedding and the trauma of Manny going back to Three Rock were enough to trigger this depressive episode for her. What didn't make sense was Bode taking it personally, abandoning her at her lowest, and starting a relationship with Audrey (Leven Rambin) so soon after. Bode had just told Gabriela that he would wait for her, and later in the season admitted that he knew she was suffering, but he still left her and moved on just like that.
Unless Fire Country gives Gabriela the opportunity to gain more training somewhere far away, or to possibly go to medical school, I don't see any reason for her to leave that actually makes sense. Sure, Gabriela isolates when she's having a hard time, but I don't think Manny would let her just leave after something so traumatic happened. As it stands right now, it doesn't make sense to me that Gabriela won't be around next season.
While I was happy to see Bode get released from Three Rock at the end of Season 2, it surprised me just how much he's been able to get away with this season. Sure, Bode has faced temporary consequences, like getting strikes during training and getting yelled at by his parents, but he always makes it out unscathed. He and Gabriela faced no lasting consequences for tampering with Gil's (Paul Moniz de Sa) necklace, and he still became a firefighter after cheating during a major test.
There is no Fire Country storyline that baffles me more than Genevieve (Alix West Lefler) leaving Jake (Jordan Calloway) to live with her biological family early on into Season 3 of Fire Country. Jake adopting Genevieve felt like a story that was in the making since Season 1, even before Cara (Sabina Gadecki) died in Season 2. Their bond was really sweet, and it was a great arc for Jake's character for him to become a parent.
I just can't see Gen willingly leaving Jake, the father that she chose, to live with her biological family. She would never plausibly do that, and it undercuts Fire Country's focus on found family. Even if Lefler was leaving the show, Fire Country could have recast Gen. Jake and Gen are family, and neither one would just let go of the other so quickly. Especially since Jake is now willing to move to Butte to become a Fire Chief, I feel like he would have moved to be near Gen before that, because she's his daughter.
