Tempers ran hot during last night's tilt between the Vancouver Canucks and Colorado Avalanche, and Miles Wood got ejected after a horrible spearing incident.
Tensions were high in Colorado Avalanche's third period in their matchup with the home opponents, the Vancouver Canucks, and it reached a head in an expulsion for Avalanche winger Miles Wood for a series of confrontational incidents with Canucks player Linus Karlsson.
The series began when Wood took a careless swipe at Karlsson with a vicious slash, and the referee duly issued a penalty for it.
Instead of backing off, however, Wood continued taunting the Canucks with deliberate contact with Karlsson's stick in getting to the penalty box.
Miles Wood was ejected for his spearing incident
His ire continued to boil over when taking a holding penalty and, in a particularly reprehensible act, speared Karlsson in exiting the rink.
Wood's actions were not unchallenged, and for them, took several penalties, including a two-minute minor for a penalty on a slash, a two-minute penalty for high-sticking, and a ten-minute misconduct, culminating in an ejection as he made his way out of the contest.
The tension kept escalating, and Canucks superstar Elias Pettersson took a two-minute minor for roughing Wood.
The sparring incidents failed to unsettle Vancouver, and it shut out Colorado with a commanding 3-0 win, taking two valuable points and sending Colorado off in frustration in terms of both scoreboard and rink activity.
The two teams will face each other another time, but not until April 10th, and fans will be eagerly awaiting that matchup to see if tensions will once again boil over.
